Black Feather: A Goth Bird Walk in Humboldt Park

  • Humboldt Park 1301 North Humboldt Drive Chicago, IL, 60622 United States (map)

Location: Humboldt Park, 1301 N Humboldt Dr, Chicago, IL 60622

Date: Saturday, 5/23/26

Time: 5:30 pm - ~8 pm

Are you looking to celebrate World Goth Day (officially on May 22, 2026, but we'll observe it a day late) a little differently this year? Do you like dark birds, dark music, and or dark clothing? If so, Black Feather may be just the event for you! Join COS for our second goth bird walk! Goth-ier and Bird-ier than ever before! How is that different from an ordinary COS bird walk? Well, participants are encouraged (but not at all obligated) to wear black and/or other goth adornments, and we'll pay special attention to any blackbirds that we find! Plus there may be appropriate-themed trivia! Everyone is welcome, including beginning birders, bird curious folks, and people who don't ever wear black for any reason, be it aesthetic or pesky pet hair.

Leaders: Chris Holden, Vinod Babu, Chris Cochrane, Anney Grish, Ryan Pate, Rachel Reichman

Pre-registration is required. Pre-registration is required. Please contact Chris Holden (twoheadedvireo@gmail.com) at least 24 hours in advance if you cannot attend or with questions. We'll have a limited number of binoculars available that folks can request in advance on a first come first served basis.

Accessibility:

Total trip distance is approximately 1.5 miles and will take place mostly on wide paved, crushed-gravel, or wood-chip trails that are relatively level with minimal incline. We may leave the trail at times to walk through the grass for a better view of the birds. Any recent rain may create muddy conditions.

Restrooms are available at the Humboldt Park Fieldhouse until it closes at 6 pm so they will only be available at the beginning of the walk.

Weather/Attire/Other:

Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Please bring bottled water. In addition to dressing for the weather, people are welcome to wear black, their favorite dark wave band t-shirt, or anything else that they are inspired to. There is absolutely no dress code, however!

The exact meeting location will be emailed in advance to registrants. Free parking is available at the Humboldt Park Boat House: 1301 N Humboldt Dr.  The park is also accessible by public transit via the following bus routes: 94 and 70.

Respiratory Illness Precautions:

COS supports the decision of individual trip participants to wear a mask.
