COS in the Suburbs: Bird Walk at Penny Road Pond

Join Chicago Ornithological Society (COS) for an afternoon birding trip at Spring Lake Forest Preserve. The Forest Preserves of Cook County manages this 4,000-acre site that contains 45 miles of trails meandering through special habitats including remnant prairie, sedge meadow, and fen. This preserve is designated as an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society for its breeding habitats for Bobolink and Henslow’s Sparrow.

Accessibility:

This trip is designed to be a moderately-paced, social bird walk traveling approximately 1-2 miles. This trip will take place on mostly grass and natural dirt terrain with recurring slight inclines and declines and occasional obstacles including uneven terrain, roots, and holes. Dress for the weather. Restrooms and water fountains are not available onsite. Cell reception is regularly available. Loaner binoculars will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Weather/Attire/Other:

Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Please bring bottled water. Dress for the weather. Based on the forecast, you may want to bring a hat and sunscreen and possible a light jacket. Ticks can be expected here. Long pants and insect repellent are recommended.

The exact meeting location will be emailed in advance to registrants. Free parking is available in the parking lot.
