COS in the Suburbs: Spring Lake Forest Preserve

  • Spring Lake Forest Preserve United States (map)

Location: Spring Lake Forest Preserve

Date: Tuesday, 9/16/25

Time: 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Birders of all experience levels and ages are welcome to attend.

Join COS in the suburbs at Spring Lake Forest Preserve. Owned and managed by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, this 4,000-acre site contains 45 miles of trails meandering through special habitats including remnant prairie, sedge meadow, and fen. This preserve is designated as an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society for its breeding habitats for Bobolink and Henslow’s Sparrow. We will walk approximately 2 miles of unpaved trails at the Beverly Lake and Healy Savannah sections looking for migratory birds. Loaner binoculars will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Leaders: Sammy Cabindol

Pre-registration is required. Please contact Sammy Cabindol (wildlifesammy@gmail.com) at least 24 hours in advance if you cannot attend or with questions.

Accessibility:

Total trip distance is approximately 1-2 miles and will take place mostly on wide paved, crushed-gravel, or wood-chip trails that are relatively level with minimal incline. We may leave the trail at times to walk through the grass for a better view of the birds. Any recent rain may create muddy conditions.

Restrooms are unavailable.

Weather/Attire/Other:

Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Please bring bottled water. Dress for the weather. Ticks can be expected here. Long pants and insect repellent are recommended. Loaner binoculars will be available.

The exact meeting location will be emailed in advance to registrants. Free parking is available in the parking lot.
