Air Station Prairie Woodcock Walk

  • Kent Fuller Air Station Prairie 2400 Compass Road Glenview, IL, 60026 United States (map)

Join Chicago Ornithological Society on an evening hike to observe the spectacular mating dance of the elusive Timberdoodle (American Woodcock). All ages and experience levels are welcome on this twilight adventure.

Please dress aggressively for the weather with multiple layers as temperatures can drop rapidly after sunset and timberdoodling is frigid business. Flashlights permitted but not required and loaner binoculars will be available.

Leader: Tarik Shahzad

You must RSVP in advance. Pre-registration is required for the bird walk. Please contact Tarik Shahzad (tarik.shahzad1997@gmail.com) or Christina Harber (ceharber@yahoo.com) at least 24 hours in advance if you cannot attend or with questions.

Accessibility:
Total trip distance is approximately 0.5 miles. Trail is unpaved, often muddy, and sometimes under water so sturdy, waterproof footwear is strongly recommended. Despite the cold weather, ticks are emerging at this time. We strongly recommend applying deet-free insect repellant, ensuring sleeves cover all exposed skin and are tucked, and to complete a comprehensive tick check when you return home. We will stay on path to minimize brushing against tall grass which ticks inhabit and to protect the remnant prairie ecosystem.

No restrooms are available at the site during the time of the walk.

Weather/Attire/Other:
Trail is unpaved, often muddy, and sometimes under water so sturdy, waterproof footwear is strongly recommended. Please bring bottled water. Dress for the weather. Based on the forecast, you may want to bring a light jacket or heavy coat as well as gloves and a hat. Loaner binoculars will be available.

Location and Transportation:
The exact meeting location will be emailed in advance to registrants. Free street and parking lot parking is available. The location is not readily accessible by public transit.

Public Health:
Please bring a face mask with you. You may be asked to wear it as needed by the trip leader.
