Along with the following programs, our meetings include club news and the ever-popular member sightings reports. The meetings are fun and informal, and are usually held at 7:00PM on the third Monday of each month (except June, July, August, and December).
In place of a regular meeting, we are having an evening field trip around North Pond on May 19. Please join us at 6:30 by the casting pier behind Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. As you know, during migration Geoff Williamson’s weekly Wednesday field trip here regularly gets over 60 species. Come on out for the evening shift!
You’ve probably heard the old joke about Wisconsin being the largest state park in Illinois. (Maybe you’ve even got the T-shirt.) Isn’t it about time to investigate the best birding places in “our park?” Life-long birder, award-winning journalist and videographer Steve Betchka will share his recommendations on the top places to see great birds throughout Wisconsin.
Steve has videotaped over 250 species of birds, writes for Birder’s World magazine and is a contributor to John Feith’s “Birds, Birds, Birds: An Indoor Birdwatching Field Trip”. When he is not pursing his birding activities, Steve works as the chief photographer for a TV station in Eau Claire.
INHS avian ecologist Dr. Chris Whelan will talk about the “demands of the migratory annual cycle, the problems and solutions.” Using examples from his location at the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, Chris will explore migration from various angles: what is it; why do it; how to do it; navigation; physiology; hazards; and global climate change. By understanding what motivates birds, perhaps we birders can improve our chances of spotting them in action.
Unless otherwise indicated, COS meetings start at 7:00 p.m. at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, 2430 N. Cannon Drive in Lincoln Park. You can arrive anytime after 6:30 to socialize.
The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is located on the northwest corner of Fullerton Avenue and Cannon Drive in Lincoln Park in Chicago.
Driving directions: From Lake Shore Drive in either direction, exit at Fullerton and travel west. Turn right/north at Cannon Drive (the first light). The Notebaert Nature Museum is on your left and the main entrance faces Cannon Drive. Look for street parking on either side of the street. Parking is also available in the Lincoln Park Zoo lot south of Fullerton for $12 (at night in the fall and winter, the parking fee is not always charged).
By public transportation: The north and southbound #156 LaSalle bus drops passengers at Fullerton and Stockton, 0.2 miles west of the Notebaert. The north and southbound #22 Clark Street bus drops passengers at Fullerton and Clark, 0.4 miles west of the museum.
Bike racks are available outside the museum
