We’ll look for “grasspipers” – Buff-breasted and Upland Sandpipers – plus golden-plovers, on the sod farms near Momence. There are sod farms to check in close-by Indiana, too. Other interesting possibilities at the sod farms include Western Meadowlark and Cliff Swallow, and a variety of other habitats are temptingly close.
Directions: Meet at the Burger King on IL-1 just south of the Kankakee River in Momence. From Chicago, take I-94 south. At the junction with I-80/294, continue south onto IL-394. Take IL-394 south to where it ends at IL-1. Go south on IL-1 to the town of Momence (be aware that where IL-1 meets IL-17 you need to make a right turn to stay on IL-1) cross the river and the Burger King is on your right. You can also reach Momence by taking IL-17 east for I-57.

Join Walter Marcisz for a tour of the Lake Calumet area wetlands in search of marsh birds & migrants. Target birds will include the less common herons and other wetland birds. Migrant shorebirds are also a possibility if water levels are cooperative.
Scopes will be helpful for the trip, and sturdy boots/waterproof footwear are recommended.
Meet at O’Brien Lock & Dam.
Directions: Take I-94 to 130th Street. Exit eastbound on 130th and turn right just before the steel bridge into the drive for O’Brien Lock & Dam. Turn left after the railroad underpass and proceed to the parking lot.
